Woods Hudson Elementary School

Woods Hudson Elementary School is a school with one pupil, one headmaster, and several tutors and advisors. The entire focus of the school is to ensure that its one pupil, Issac Woods-Hudson, will benefit from a full, well-rounded education that will serve him in his pursuits later in life. Issac is home schooled.

While the bulk of our schooling is carried out at home, we look upon the world as our school. Much of our work is done during normal school hours but a lot of it is done outside these hours as well. We have adopted the "we never stop learning" approach to education.

Our School Crest

Our school crest is a sheild with a fleur-de-lys, a dove with an olive branch and the letters "WH".

The fleur-de-lys (water lily) has many meaning for us. It appears on the Québec flag, the flag of the Canadian province in which we live. The fleur-de-lys is particularly associated with the French monarchy in a historical context. We are descedants of the family "Langevin" who first moved to Québec around the year 1630. It also forms part of the symbol for Scouts Canada. Issac is a cub-scout and he takes great joy in all of his scouting activities. On a more personal note, it is also a flower that resides in the harbour of our sailing club on the shores of Lac St-Louis in Dorval, Québec.

The dove carrying an olive branch has a special meaning of hope and peace for our school. In Judeo-Christian symbolism, the dove brings an olive branch to Noah as the flood recedes and in the New Testament it embodies the Holy Spirit. The olive branch is also associated with Italy, the birth place of Maria Montessori. The Montessori method, based on the work of Maria Montessori with children in Italy, is the method of teaching followed in our school.

As for the letters "WH", well you don't need to be smarter than a fifth grader to figure that one out. :)

Our School Motto

Our School Motto "Never let schooling get in the way of your education" is a quote from Mark Twain. Mark Twain is the pen name of Samuel Clemmens, who was also home schooled.
